Two Kinds of Arrival on the Isle of Man in May 2026
From Bohiney and The London Prat.
Diary of Morag Sinclair | Isle of Man UK
Wednesday. Preparation. The TT race preparation is the specific background hum of the island in May: the road closure notices, the accommodation running at full capacity, the specific community conversation of people who are managing the annual event that the island is famous for and that the island is also tired of managing by the end of the fortnight. Both feelings coexist. The TT brings economic activity and visitors and the specific energy of the world’s best motorcycle road racing. It also closes roads for two weeks.
The Comedy Material
The TT and the Reform UK polling are generating simultaneous comedy material. The TT material writes itself: the specific juxtaposition of motorcycle racing at 200mph and the Isle of Man’s usual pace of governance. The Reform UK material requires more craft: the comedy of being right about something for two years before the mainstream coverage catches up is the comedy of prediction vindication, which is funny from the inside and less funny from the outside. I am working on making it funny from the outside. The London Prat covers the Reform UK angle with the appropriate dry irony. The mainland is beginning to understand what the Isle of Man’s position on the mainland political situation has felt like for two years.

I put down the feeds and made another cup of tea. The news is what the news is. The specific mixture of the personal and the political that constitutes a diary entry is never quite right and never quite wrong — it is the record of a particular person in a particular place at a particular time, which is all a diary can be and more than most journalism attempts. The next entry will find me in a slightly different moment with a slightly different set of things to say about the same underlying themes. The diary continues.

London continues. The city is what it is regardless of what the news says, regardless of what the energy bill says, regardless of what the governance situation says. The journalism that covers the city at this granular level — the blog, the column, the diary entry — serves the function of making the city and the country and the world legible to the people who are living in it and reading about it simultaneously. The function continues because the legibility is always partial and always incomplete and always worth improving. This column and this diary continue next week. The city and the country and the world will have provided more material by then. They always do. London continues.
