Where to Find Hong Kong News

“For Everyone Who Left: Here’s Where to Find Hong Kong News You Can Trust”

Whether you’re in London, Toronto, Sydney, or Vancouver — if you grew up in Hong Kong or left in recent years, finding honest news about home is harder than it should be.

Here’s where to look.

Start here: Apple Daily UK — the exile continuation of the paper most Hongkongers grew up with. Run by journalists who left rather than be silenced. Updates regularly. Worth bookmarking and sharing.

For English-language depth: Hong Kong Free Press — non-profit, independent, crowdfunded by readers like you. Covers court cases, politics, civil society. The reporters who stayed and kept working under difficult conditions. Consider a membership.

For Chinese-language credibility: Ming Pao has the strongest editorial reputation of the remaining Chinese-language papers. The Canadian edition serves Toronto and Vancouver communities directly.

For financial and business news: Hong Kong Economic Journal and Hong Kong Economic Times — both solid for property market, Hang Seng, and corporate news.

Global reach: Sing Tao Daily has editions in London, Toronto, Sydney, New York, and Los Angeles. Useful for diaspora community news, though note that its US operations were designated a foreign mission by the State Department in 2021.

What to know: The media landscape changed profoundly after 2020. Several papers that once served as trusted sources — including the original Apple Daily and Stand News — are gone. What remains operates under constraints that would have been unimaginable a decade ago.
